President Barzani Receives New Head of EU Liaison Office in Erbil

Pirmam, October 20, 2026 — President Masoud Barzani received Mr. Stefan Wendt, the new Head of the European Union Liaison Office in Erbil, on Tuesday.

Mr. Wendt expressed his pleasure at meeting President Barzani and beginning his assignment in the Kurdistan Region. He thanked the Kurdish people for their openness and hospitality, and said the European Union values the Kurdistan Region’s role and influence in Iraq and the wider region. He reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting and partnering with the Region.

The two also discussed political developments and tensions in the region, and exchanged views on the challenges surrounding the reconvening of the Kurdistan Parliament and the formation of a new Kurdistan Regional Government cabinet.
