Today, 4 November 2026, the Kurdistan Parliament resumed its first session with the participation of a parliamentary majority and, through a legal and democratic process, elected the Presidency of Parliament.
While extending our congratulations to all the people of Kurdistan, we also congratulate the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Secretary of Parliament and wish them every success in fulfilling their national responsibilities.
This was a long-overdue but necessary step towards safeguarding the constitutional entity of the Kurdistan Region. Regrettably, for the past two years, due to political decisions taken by the leadership of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the New Generation Movement, this legitimate institution of the Kurdistan Region, which represents the voice and will of the people, had been paralysed.
Today, a majority of parliamentarians from different parliamentary blocs, recognising their national responsibilities, respecting the will of the people, and honouring their legal oaths, successfully upheld the democratic process and brought an end to the legal vacuum and the imposition of the will of a political minority.
This achievement came despite numerous threats directed against certain members of Parliament and their families. Such intimidation represents a dangerous development and a direct threat to democracy and the will of the people. It reflects a mentality that does not contribute to the democratisation of the various spheres of life within Kurdistan society.
We hope that all political parties and stakeholders will respect the will and aspirations of the people and uphold the democratic process.
The Kurdistan Parliament is the legitimate forum for political and legal dialogue and serves as an essential pillar of unity and solidarity within the Kurdistan Region.
The reactivation of Parliament is not directed against any individual or political party. Its doors remain open to all. We hope that, following the resumption of parliamentary activities, the parliamentary blocs of other political parties will also make positive decisions and participate in safeguarding the legitimacy and constitutional entity of the Kurdistan Region.
Furthermore, we hope that this step will encourage all parties to assume their shared responsibilities in advancing the Kurdistan Region during this sensitive period, bringing different perspectives closer together, and working collectively in the service of the people and the future of Kurdistan.
Mahmoud Mohammed Spokesperson of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) 4 November 2026
